Chapter 15

They’d spent the following morning with sheets of graph paper and pens, sketching out possible bathroom layouts since that Phil guy wouldn’t be back until tomorrow. They’d managed by themselves to gut both bathrooms and the master closet already, and soon, they’d be heading to Dovey’s.

He wasn’t sure how he felt about that. Yeah, he liked Dovey—what wasn’t to like? As he gelled his hair, he listed her merits. She was sweet and kind and beautiful and talented—way too good for a serial cheater like Brady. She deserved someone with an honest soul and gentle hands.

Something inside his brain kicked him, reminding him that he had gentle hands, just calloused. He’d never struck a woman, never punched a dude... though he’d consider breaking that lifelong streak for Brady if he laid a hand on Dovey.

How many times had Chance caught Brady cheating on his girlfriends in high school? He’d be willing to bet he’d dated Dovey the second Chance had moved away—why wouldn’t he? And Chance would lay money on the fact that Brady had cheated on her while they dated. It was the one thing Chance had hated most about his friend—the infidelity. He was pathologically incapable of faithfulness. Even now, Chance had to wonder how many call girls were in Brady’s suite, even as he panted after Dovey’s tail.

Not that Chance ever wanted to get tied down. Marriage seemed like a death sentence.

But for Dovey?

He gripped his arm where she had held him during their trident competition and let out a heart-heavy sigh. For Dovey....

It seemed like she was forever out of his reach.

He wasn’t sure why he believed that, but he did. And of the two of them, Chance reasoned he was clearly the better choice, not Brady. Chance would never cheat on any girl; it wasn’t in him. He’d never harm anyone the way his father had. And he’d devoted his life to ensuring people were safe in their homes instead of how well he padded his bank account.

But how to tell all that to Dovey and not risk her rejection?

He picked up his toothpaste and considered his YouTube station as he brushed: how he confronted DIY fails, sometimes triggering tears, but he always told his customers— always— how dangerous one of their attempted repairs was and explained what could have happened if he hadn’t shown up to fix it. He didn’t sugarcoat his words, but wasn’t saving their lives more important than sparing their feelings? And he always left them gifts when the job was done, though he refused to let anyone reveal that secret. One time it was an above-ground pool, another a generator, another a wooden playhouse for their children. His favorite, though, was when he anonymously donated five hundred dollars to the local school lunch program in memory of a family’s child who had passed. He’d heard the school had started a fund in the boy’s name afterward, and it was going strong.

Chance splashed on some cologne and assessed his reflection.
